Dear Colleagues,

on 17–19 September 2015 the Kassák Museum is organizing an international conference entitled Local Contexts / International Networks – Avant-Garde Magazines in Central Europe (1910–1935). The subject of the conference is the ‘Central European avant-garde magazine’, arguably the most important medium of communication for progressive literature and visual arts in the region during and after WWI. Given the multifaceted nature of the phenomenon, the analysis will take an interdisciplinary perspective. The avant-garde magazine will be examined as a discursive space of avant-garde communication, as a ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’, and as a historical document, aiming to draw more attention to the interrelationships between the local contexts and international networks of Central European avant-gardes. The conference is supported by the International Visegrad Fund and the Centre français de recherche en sciences sociales (CEFRES). The program is available here.

The conference is accompanied by the temporary exhibition of the Kassák Museum entitled Signal to the World – War ∩ Avant-Garde ∩ Kassák dedicated to the first avant-garde magazine of Lajos Kassák, A Tett [The Action] published between 1915–1916. More information is available here.

The OAD has recently published Gábor Dobó’s interview with Evanghelia Stead, professor of Comparative Literature at the UVSQ and director of the TIGRE seminar on recent questions of periodical research. You can read the interview here, and find the most recent posts of OAD here.

The OAD is aimed at everyone engaged in research or otherwise interested in modernist and avant-garde art. It works in the same way as a social media platform, building up from user contributions via an internet interface, also keeps users constantly up-to-date with what is going on in avant-garde research. The mission of the OAD is to strengthen international cooperation within the avant-garde research community and to engage non-experts in avant-garde art and research. We would like to encourage you to join the OAD community – registration is available here.

Sincerely,

The OAD Team
