Lajos Kassák’s first journal A Tett (The Action), launched in 1915, was primarily an artistic and political attack on the culture of war. With a left-wing, socially-committed outlook, it employed social criticism and the novel principles of journal publishing to stand up to prevailing wartime discourse of stigmatizing the enemy. The radical artistic and political standpoint represented by A Tett may not be immediately apparent to the modern reader. In the hundred years that have passed, the points of reference against which the journal appeared seditious, violating norms and even “threatening the interests of warfare” have faded away. The exhibition outlines the Hungarian and international contexts in which A Tett operated, showing how the journal did indeed constitute a “signal to the world”, the Kassák slogan chosen as the exhibition title. The purpose is not, however, to put on a reverential centenary celebration of Kassák’s journal. To present A Tett merely as a bold stand against the war or, concentrating on the aesthetics of the art it published, as a museum of attempts by the early avant-garde to seek a way forward, would be too narrow an aim. Drawing on primary sources, the exhibition reconstructs the context against which A Tett was making a politically motivated and artistically valid response. This context comprised above all the popular press, the culture of war, and artistic and political hinterland of the journal and the anti-war international art that was the conceptual basis for Kassák’s response.

The exhibition organized by the National Museum in Warsaw and the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid is dedicated to a central figure in the Polish avant-garde and modern movement, Tadeusz Peiper, poet, theatre writer, theoretician – and to the artistic and literary relations between avant-garde movements in Poland and Spain during the first decades of the 20th century. Tadeusz Peiper has been one of the central figures of the Avant-garde in Central Europe. What is little known, however, is that he had been formed as a thinker and writer in Madrid in the years 1915-1920, where he had been part of the Polish circle of artists active within the Ultraist movement. After his return to Poland in 1920-21 his esthetic ideas have influenced poetry, painting, photomontage, film and theater in his homeland. Peiper was instrumental in bringing about the influential magazine Zwrotnica, produced in collaboration with constructivist painter Wladyslaw Strzeminski and others , had been close with leading figures of the avant-garde, including Vincente Huidobro, Kazimir Malevich, Juan Gris, Fernand Leger, and others.

This is the first one-man exhibition in Japan introducing the entirety of the Hungarian-born artist Laszlo Moholy-Nagy (1895-1946), who is known as a constructivist and a teacher at the Bauhaus.   His wide-ranging activities including photography, design, film, kinetic art and art education were consistently in pursuit of "the new vision" brought about by "artistic use of light and movement" and therefore he is esteemed as a pioneer in media art. The collection belonging to the artist's family, which is being shown in Japan for the first time, forms the core of the approximately 300 works and reference materials gathered from museums in and outside of Japan.

Part I. - Germany and European Modernism 1890-1914 Part I (The World of Yesterday) of the exhibition depicts the pre-war emergence of a new European phenomenon: modernism, as represented here by outstanding examples of poster, commercial, and book. Part II (Words in Freedom - Rebellion of the Avant-garde) of the exhibition traces the publishing and communications network of the avant-garde movements of Futurism and Expressionism. Much of the material stems from the archive of Herwarth Walden's magazine 'Der Sturm'. The collector's archive of Egidio Marzona also figures highly in the selection of works, in an exhibition that furthermore aims to raise the profile of the Kulturforum as a site of learning and new research.
